Stephen Murray-Smith has been the gay-market sales manager for the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council since 1997.
When he first got involved in gay destination marketing more than 17 years ago, he never imagined that his work would bring him national and international accolades, or that “Out & About Travel,” the nationally acclaimed newsletter for gay and lesbian traveler would induct him into its Hall of Fame. Or that he would be the recipient of Travel Alternative Groups’ Global Leadership Award for Gay & Lesbian Travel.
In 1999, Murray-Smith opened international closet doors by raising a rainbow flag at the ITB convention in Berlin and at World Travel Market in London, telling the world that gay travelers were welcome in Florida and the Keys. Today with the support of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Murray-Smith continues to promote the Keys throughout the world.
Murray-Smith serves on the board of directors of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association and has served as the organization’s treasurer and president.
Widely known as “Mr. Key West,” Murray-Smith remains (in the words of “Out & About Travel”) “a passionate and tireless promoter of this ever-evolving gay resort destination.”
